Innovation Zone: Green Light for the Development of a Master Plan

Sherbrooke, Tuesday, November 19, 2024 – The City of Sherbrooke is taking a major step forward in the development of its innovation zone by partnering with Distriq, Quantum Innovation Zone, and the Ministry of Economy, Innovation, and Energy (MEIE) to implement a master plan.

Key Objectives of the Master Plan

  • Characterize the study area to gain a clear picture of the current situation and establish a diagnostic framework to guide the vision and development strategies.
  • The analysis will focus on mobility, urban planning, land use, urban infrastructure, housing, economic development, the enhancement and redevelopment of living environments, architecture, the environment, urban design, and engineering. While the innovation zone encompasses three interconnected sectors in the heart of Sherbrooke, including the Université de Sherbrooke and the downtown area, the master plan will primarily focus on the South Shore of the Magog River. The other two sectors already benefit from several recently adopted land-use planning tools.
  • Refine the preliminary vision for the innovation zone and propose a development concept based on clear objectives.

A total budget of $425,000 is estimated for the development of the master plan:

  • $313,268 will be provided by Distriq and the MEIE.
  • The City will contribute $111,732.

The master plan will align with the City’s urban plan, which is currently under development.

Next Steps

  • Launch of a call for tenders to identify an urban planning firm to assist the City and Quantum Innovation Zone in developing the master plan (ongoing).
  • Awarding of the contract for the plan's development in December 2024.
  • Development of the master plan (approximately 9 to 12 months).

The City will involve citizens in the key stages of the innovation zone’s development through the master plan, consistent with its vision for economic growth and land use planning, to create attractive and sustainable communities.

“The development of the innovation zone is essential for the growth, prosperity, and influence of Sherbrooke and the region. This master plan will define a clear vision and take concrete actions to transform our territory into a world-class innovation hub, showcasing the ingenuity and creativity of Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships.” – Évelyne Beaudin, Mayor of Sherbrooke.

“The master plan is a critical step in structuring and directing the development of the innovation zone. It will serve as a strategic roadmap for creating a dynamic, sustainable, and innovative space. We are honored to contribute to this visionary project, which will position Sherbrooke as a model of creativity and prosperity while reinforcing its role as a hub for innovation and sustainable growth.” – Pascale Nini, CEO, Distriq, Quantum Innovation Zone.
